As I am beginning a new adventure this year by switching grade levels I have been desperately seeking new ideas to engage my students. I have been thinking a lot about spelling words. I had a parent tell me last year "My child really loves first grade but he gets tired of the same repetitive spelling homework. Write the word __ times, write in a color. etc. etc."
This really got me thinking. Part of my evaluation is giving students choices. An idea hit me:
Why not let the children pick what they want to do with their spelling words.
So here it is: Spelling Word Cafe!
Students get to pick what they want to do. They are still practicing their words, they just get to choose how. As long as they are practicing and doing well with the words, what could it hurt?
